A sculpture entitled The Heart Travels in memory of Vaclav Havel, playwright, writer, human rights activist, dissident and the first president of the Czech Republic, will be erected in Sofia's square named after him, the organizers said. The monument created by Czech artist Prof. Kurt Gebauer will be unveiled on Thursday.

The event was initiated by numerous Bulgarians, Sofia Discussion Forum, America for Bulgaria Foundation, Sofia Municipality and the Cultural Information Centre of Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski. The funds for the construction, placement and subsequent maintenance will be provided by the civic association The Heart Travels. The Sofia Municipality will also contribute BGN 15,000.

Gebauer is also the creator of Heart, another project dedicated to Havel that can be seen in Prague.

Playwright, dissident and politician, Havel was also a founding member of Charter 77. Leading figure in the political changes of November 1989, the last President of Czechoslovakia (1989-1992) and the first President of the Czech Republic (1993-2003). Authored two dozen plays and many essays.
