More than 25,000 people have attended the 48 performances that took place during the summer season of the Sofia Opera and Ballet (SOB), SOB said on Wednesday.

"With its dynamic activity, the Sofia Opera is constantly generating new impulses to expand cultural horizons, open new territories to attract new audiences, and create opportunities to provide these audiences with easy access to opera, ballet, and musicals," SOB Director Plamen Kartaloff said.

This year the summer season featured performances on four outdoor stages: "Opera in the Park" (in the park of the Rakovski National Defence College, "Muses of Water" (near the Lake Pancharevo), "Opera of the Peaks" (over the Belogradchik Rocks) and "Opera on the Square" (in front of the St Alexander Nevsky Patriarchal Cathedral).

The new season will offer premieres of operas, ballets, musicals, and a new children's play. The season will open on September 15 and 17 with The Great Gatsby. On September 27 and 29, world-renowned maestro Daniel Oren will conduct Puccini's Turandot, with Anna Pirozzi invited to star as Turandot and Jorge de León as Calaf.
