In her address on the 117th anniversary of the declaration of Bulgaria's Independence, National Assembly Chair Nataliya Kiselova said: "Only by staying united and focused on national priorities can we build our State to be prosperous, respected and appealing to young people."

Kiselova participated in the celebrations of Independence Day in Veliko Tarnovo on Monday. On this date in 1908, Prince Ferdinand read the Manifesto on the proclamation of independence in that town.

"Our ancestors set an example of wisdom and foresight in the nation's most pivotal moments," Kiselova noted. "It is our duty to follow their advice and cherish Bulgaria."

"'Long live the kingdom!' was the greeting used by our compatriots in those days," said Kiselova. The enthusiasm was universal, as people understood the significance of the momentous event, which marked Bulgaria's transition from an autonomous vassal principality to a sovereign, fully-fledged state, she said.

"This is the third step, after the Liberation of 1878 and the Unification of 1885, towards the national ideal of all Bulgarians being free, united and equal to other nations," said Kiselova. "Following the diplomatic defence of our independence and recognition by the Great Powers and neighbouring States, Bulgaria emerged on the international stage as an equal State, capable of developing independently both politically and economically."

There is no more symbolic place than Veliko Tarnovo for the solemn proclamation of the Manifesto announcing this historic act by Prince Ferdinand and the government of Alexander Malinov.

On Monday, official attendees included Municipal Council Chairman Ventsislav Spirdonov, Regional Governor Julia Likomanova-Mutafchieva, Brigadier General Stancho Kaykov, Commandant of the Vasil Levski National Military University, MPs, representatives of educational and state institutions and political parties. Also present were BTA Director General Kiril Valchev and ARMENPRESS Director Narine Nazaryan.
