Assoc. Prof. Petko Stefanovski, nominated by GERB-UDF, was elected National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) Governor. 147 MPs voted in favour of the decision, while 81 stood against it.
Stefanovski’s nomination was supported by GERB-UDF, the Movement for Rights and Freedoms – New Beginning, the Bulgarian Socialist Party – United Left, the Democracy, Rights and Freedoms party, and There Is Such a People. Meanwhile, Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria, Vazrazhdane, MECh – Morality, Unity, Honour, and Velichie [Grandeur] voted against.
Stefanovski will serve a five-year term, taking over from Stanimir Mihaylov.
Stefanovski has over 25 years of experience in the healthcare system, including 20 years in emergency medical services. He holds a master’s degree in medicine and a second qualification degree in Public Health and Health Management. He previously served as Deputy Minister of Health in the government led by Acad. Nikolay Denkov.
A graduate of the Medical University of Pleven, Stefanovski specializes in Emergency Medicine, Anesthesiology and Intensive Care. Since 2014, he has been part of the teaching staff in the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care at the Medical University of Pleven. He also served as the long-time head of the Emergency Department at the Georgi Stranski University Hospital in Pleven.
