Plovdiv was chosen as the best wine capital in Europe for 2025, according to a study by the tourist organisation European Best Destinations. Over 284,000 people from 82 countries participated in the survey, which placed the Bulgarian city ahead of iconic wine regions such as Bordeaux, La Rioja and Tuscany.

Plovdiv Mayor Kostadin Dimitrov emphasised that this distinction solidifies Plovdiv's place on the map of wine destinations, adding that the recognition is much more than a title, but a powerful tool for visibility and economic development. He recalled that Plovdiv will host the 9th edition of the Global Wine Tourism Conference.

The website of European Best Destinations stated that Plovdiv hosts some of the most prestigious world competitions such as the Digital Wine Communications Conference, Concours Mondial de Bruxelles and Spirits Selection by Concours Mondial de Bruxelles. They pointed out that excellent grape varieties such as Mavrud, Rubin, Malaga, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and many others are grown in Plovdiv Region. The tourist organisation also stressed that Wine Enthusiast Magazine ranked Plovdiv in the Top 10 of the best destinations for wine tourism.
