The Road Infrastructure Agency (RIA) issued a travel advisory for code yellow and code orange areas. People are advised to avoid travelling unless it's absolutely necessary. If they must travel, they should do so with extreme caution, the Agency said on Wednesday.
The reason for the advisory is the extremely cold temperatures and continued snowfall. In spite of the ongoing cleaning of the roads, sudden icing is forming in places, which poses a serious risk to traffic safety, the RIA added.
As of 6:30 Wednesday morning, the RIA said road surfaces were mostly wet, snow-covered, possibly icy in places, but were treated and passable under winter conditions. Temperatures ranged from -13°C to +1°C.
Snowfall of light to moderate intensity is reported across most of the country. Heavy snowfall is reported in the coastal city of Varna.
Due to strong wind, low visibility and snow drifts, the Karnobat-Burgas section of the Trakia Motorway is closed for vehicles over 12 tons, the RIA further reported.
According to the weather forecast of the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology orange code is issued for parts of Burgas region (Southeast Bulgaria), and yellow code in nine regions due to low temperatures - Yambol, Sliven, Targovishte, Ruse, Razgrad, Silistra, Dobrich, Varna, Shumen.
