The crew of the Sv. Sv. Kiril i Metodii research vessel (RSV 421) and staff from the Bulgarian Antarctic base "St. Kliment Ohridski" on Livingston Island spent the day loading and unloading, saw BTA's special correspondent Milena Ostrovska.
Waste construction materials were loaded on RSV 421 and transported from the shore to the ship by Zodiac boats and a pontoon raft. The cargo was stowed on board and then standard daily maintenance of the hull and material part was carried out. Crew assisted with the logistics of completing the new laboratory block in the Antarctic base.
Ashore, maintenance work was performed on the base and work is underway to complete the lab block. The day’s research was carried out in the Antarctic base's vicinity.
The RSV 421 sailed from Varna for its third expedition to Antarctica on November 7, 2024 and after almost two months of sailing reached Livingston Island on December 28. The Bulgarian Antarctic base "St. Kliment Ohridski" was opened for the new polar season on November 23, 2024.
BTA has a national press club on board the ship and for the third year in a row is sending a correspondent to Antarctica. The materials of BTA envoy Milena Ostrovska are freely available in the special thematic section in Bulgarian and English.
June 2023. BTA published in Bulgarian and English an issue of LIK magazine "To Antarctica and back under the Bulgarian flag". In May 2024, BTA published an issue of LIK magazine dedicated to Bulgarian science in Antarctica, which is freely available in electronic format. The issue has been translated into English and Spanish.
In February of 2024, BTA also opened a national press club at the Bulgarian Antarctic Base "St. Kliment Ohridski" on Livingston Island. The Press Clubs exist thanks to the support of the Bulgarian research vessel and the Bulgarian Antarctic base with the premises provided, which are added to the other 40 national press clubs (33 in Bulgaria, 6 outside the country - in neighbouring countries and in countries with large Bulgarian communities, and one mobile National Book Press Club).
In this way, the Bulgarian national news agency contributes to the presentation of Bulgarian science in Antarctica and fulfils its mission to promote Bulgaria.
