On September 22, Bulgaria marks 116 years since the declaration of its independence.

A solemn ceremony was held at 11 am at the Independence of Bulgaria monument on Knyaz Alexander I square in Sofia.

"This is one of the brightest Bulgarian holidays that we should celebrate," Sofia Municipal Council Chair Tsvetomir Petrov, told the media. "Along with the Unification, today's holiday is one of the most important" he pointed out and called on people to defend Bulgarian interests first and foremost.

The programme featured the Sofia Brass Orchestra, the Saint Sofia choir led by Valentin Bobevski, the Gusla men's choir and actress Vasilka Sugareva.
The celebration is part of the Cultural Events Calendar of Sofia Municipality.
