The 32,440 road traffic accidents that occurred in Bulgaria in 2023 were by nearly 3% more than in 2022. At 9,101, the casualties increased by 8.1%. The death toll was 525, including 37 foreigners. As many as 6,607 accidents or 26% of the total resulted from driving faster or slower than conditions allowed and from speeding.

The figures come from a new electronic publication titled "Road Traffic Accidents in the Republic of Bulgaria 2023" - a joint project of the National Statistical Institute (NSI) and the Ministry of Interior, NSI said in a Facebook post on Monday.

A breakdown by month shows that August was the deadliest for road users. The 61 road deaths in August 2023 were nearly double the 32 killed in April. Within a day, the largest number of accidents involving fatalities occur between 4 and 6 p.m.: 1,050 accidents for the year with a death toll of 72.

A breakdown by weekday reveals that Fridays witness road traffic accidents with most casualties: 15.6% of the total. Most deaths occur on Saturdays, 17.1%, and least on Tuesdays, 12.4%.
