site.btaOne in Three Tourists at Krushuna Falls a Foreigner

More than 30% of tourists visiting Krushuna Falls are foreigners, with the main visitors being Romanians, said Letnitsa Mayor Dr. Krasimir Dzhonev in a BTA interview. Krushuna Falls are a series of waterfalls in Northern Bulgaria, in the village of Krushuna, Letnitsa Municipality, near the city of Lovech, known for their picturesque landscape. 

Dzhonev said that there has been an increase in the tourist flow in the municipality this year. By July 30, 2023, 43,500 tourists had passed through Krushuna Falls, and during the same period of 2024, this number was 47,500.

Dzhonev added that according to information from guest houses, there is a trendency of outflow among Bulgarian tourists and an increase in tourists from Romania, Ukraine and other countries in the European Union. The Letnitsa Mayor also said that he and his team are looking for options to diversify  tourist attractions and activities on the territory of the municipality.

This year, a new trail was set up to Krushuna Falls, which provided for faster access to the waterfalls and an incredible overview of the Danube plain with a view all the way to the Danube.

Krushuna Falls have existed since ancient times, but in the past 15 years the Letnitsa Municipality has made efforts to advertise the spot and make it more easily accessible, Dzhonev said. 

Another popular tourist site in the area is the Golyama Garvanitsa cave, the deepest natural karst chasm in Bulgaria. It is a vertical cave that is secured, equipped with a ladder and safety nets, and is a good option for more thrill-seeking visitors, Dzhonev said. 

Stalbitsa is another interesting cave in the area, but it is managed by the State not the Municipality. 

Dzhonev also mentioned the Boninska Cave, which is a site for more special type of tourists wiith training, speleologists, etc. The cave exploration is advanced and takes about eight hours. 

Another attraction in the Letnitsa area is the old mill in Karpachevo, Dzhonev added.

he also noted that various events are organized in the village of Karpachevo, including the three-day Jazz under the Stars festival.

"Our aspiration is to increase the stay of tourists, who usually stay for one or two nights on the territory of the municipality for the purpose of tourism," concluded Dzhonev.
