Fire Reported at Waste Processing Plant Near Plovdiv, Two Firefighters Injured

A fire is burning at a waste processing plant near the southern village of Tsaratsovo, the Regional Directorate for Fire Safety and Civil Protection in Plovdiv said Wednesday evening. There are twelve firefighting teams on the scene. Water carriers of Plovdiv Municipality are providing the necessary water.

Two firefighters have been injured, the Sv. Georgi [St. George] University Hospital in Plovdiv told BTA. One of them has been treated for minor burns and released, while the other is still in hospital awaiting test results, because his injuries were not caused by the fire.

Due to the powerful convection, high-rising smoke was reported by the fire service. Air pollution is being measured, but no dangerous concentrations have been recorded at the moment.

A transport company for international shipments is located near the plant.

The Ministry of Interior said that there is no risk for nearby settlements and that the area around the fire in the industrial zone of the village of Tsaratsovo has been cordoned off by police patrols, which will remain there overnight. The movement of motor vehicles has been suspended until the firefighting teams complete their extinguishing operations.

An inspection is to be carried out Thursday to assess the causes of the blaze and the extent of material damage.
