A Korea-Bulgaria Forum for Peace in East Asia and the Balkans was held in the assembly hall of Sofia University on Monday. The event was hosted by the Faculty of History, the university said in a press release.

The forum provided a platform to share expertise between the countries of the Balkans and East Asia concerning the development of civil society and the NGO sector. It discussed challenges facing the two regions, laying particular emphasis on the strategies and the solutions applied by individual countries to achieve lasting peace and prosperity in their region.

Representatives of the university's Faculty of Philosophy working under its European Studies Programme and the Faculty of Classical and New Philologies took part in the conference.

Greeting the participants, Sofia University Deputy Rector Reneta Bozhankova said: "Peace is an absolute value because it safeguards life and creates conditions for prosperity. How to achieve peace in regions of the world which have a complicated history, but also a common future, is a question that can be answered precisely in an academic context, because universities protect the memory of the past, foster expert knowledge about contemporary developments, and make forecasts and projects for the years to come."

Mira Markova, who heads the Faculty of History, said: "We historians are aware of the destructive force of war. Studying the development of human society, we, as professionals, know that there have been wars and there will be wars. Today's forum, however, is presenting the academic viewpoint on the importance of peace."
