Тhe European Union (EU) must enlarge into Albania and Montenegro as the most prepared EU candidate countries, said Borislav Sandov, the top-of-the-list candidate of the Green Movement Party for the European Parliament elections. He was speaking during a debate on the European agenda and the Bulgarian perspective taking place in Sofia Monday.

Sandov vowed to work for a EU of 29 members at the end of the next European Parliament (EP). In his words, the Adriatic Sea will thus become internal to the EU.

Additional incentives should be given to Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine, and the EU should make it clear to Serbia that things "will not happen the way it wants to". It is in Bulgaria's best interest to see the Republic of North Macedonia becoming a member of the EU, but it is not ready, the MEP candidate said.

Asked to comment the war in Ukraine, Sandov said that while the Greens in the EP are "all for peace and always seek peaceful solutions", the only solution here is maximum support for Ukraine to be able to repel the aggressor. "When we have an aggressor who enters our neighbour's house in front of us and starts committing horrific crimes, we cannot stand by and watch idly," said Sandov.

The EU should develop its own defence strategy that is within the NATO framework. There should be a European agency that would have coordination functions related to defence and to disasters and accidents, and Bulgaria could claim to host such an agency, Sandov added.
