On this day in Bulgarian history:
1877: The Bulgarian voluntary army unit, set up at the end of 1876 as an auxiliary to the Russian Army, is transformed into the Bulgarian combatant regiment and participates in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878. The unit is called Bulgarian Opulchenie, has 7,444 soldiers, 81 officers, and is divided into six companies. After Bulgaria's Liberation from the Turkish Rule in 1878, the unit forms the basis of the Bulgarian Army.
1980: The first electrified railway track, Sofia - Gorna Oryahovitsa - Dubovo - Karlovo and Sofia, 633 km long, opens.
1998: The Commission for Protection of Competition is established.
2004: The Tsankov Kamak hydropower project is launched.
