A team of over 70 experts is working on the elaboration of a quality standard for school education, Minister of Education and Science Galin Tzokov told a news conference here on Monday. "Our understanding of quality in school education is related to the development of a child's and a pupil's strong sides. We have developed two quality frameworks: one in early childhood and the other, in school education," he explained.
The Minister specified that the new element in this quality standard is that for one year, the standard will be used through a national programme, and in the 2025/2026 school year it will be introduced after a discussion with the social partners.
At the news conference, Tzokov presented measures for changing teaching in school education related to a change in the approach and an increase of pupils' practical skills, decreasing learning by heart. "We are working on reducing the learning load," he noted.
Tzokov summarized the actions taken in the field of education and science in the first six months of his term in office. He listed the short-term and long-term reforms on which his team is working.
"We are preparing a draft revision to the Pre-school and School Education Act. Another important activity is related to the school curricula. We have made significant changes in the Vocational Education and Training Act that will give a new level of development to vocational education; there will be a new list of professionals as well," Tzokov said.
Work is being done on amending the Higher Education Act and on creating an opportunity for three-year Bachelor's programmes.
