Over 7,000 pre-trial proceedings for drugged and drunk driving were opened in January-October 2023, , Interior Minister Kalin Stoyanov said in response to a question from MP Hristo Terziyski, published on the parliament's website.

From January 1 to November 1, 2023, 3,857 pre-trial proceedings were initiated for driving with a blood alcohol concentration above 1.2 per mille. The like number was 4,232 in the like period of 2022.

A total of 235 pre-trial proceedings were opened drivers caught driving with more than 0.5 per mille of alcohol in their blood, having previously been convicted of driving with more than 1.2 per mille. In 2022, the number was 195.

In the first ten months of 2023, there were 3,523 pre-trial proceedings for drugged driving, compared to 3,429 in the same period in 2022. There were also 48 investigations opened against drivers who had already been caught driving under the influence of drugs. In 2022, the number of pre-trial proceedings was 59.
