Mountain hikers should stick to the lower altitudes, the Mountain Rescue Service advised on Wednesday. Hiking conditions are better in the lower elevations where the wind is milder.

Strong, up to gale-force west-northwesterly winds in the high and open parts of the mountains. Dropping temperatures and deteriorating weather conditions are expected - ascension to the higher parts is not recommended.

Clouds will increase and light rain will fall in places, with snow above 2,200 m. The boundary between rain and snow will decrease as temperatures drop during the day, the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology said. Highs: 13C at 1,200 m, 6C at 2,000 m.
