Iceland's civil protection service has declared a state of emergency in the area of the town of Grindavik on the Reykjanes Peninsula, south of the capital Reykjavik, over volcanic eruption concerns, the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry’s Situation Centre said on Saturday.

The Icelandic authorities reported that a magma tunnel has been formed under Grindavik. According to information from the Icelandic Meteorological Office, as of the early hours of November 11, it is difficult to determine where and when exactly magma might reach the surface. In recent days, a series of earthquakes have been recorded on the Reykjanes Peninsula and were also felt in Reykjavik.

Citizens are advised to monitor the situation with caution and to be kept informed of the developments by following the media or by calling the Icelandic emergency number 112. The Iceland Red Cross has also opened a hotline at 1717.

Bulgarian nationals can request assistance by contacting the Foreign Ministry’s Situation Centre by phone (+359 2 948 24 04, +359 2 971 38 56) or by email (crisis@mfa.bg), as well as the Bulgarian Embassy in Norway (+47 480 89 793, or at embassy.oslo@mfa.bg), which is responsible for Iceland.
