Social workers from the regional child protection departments of the Social Assistance Agency have been providing assistance and support to dozens of unaccompanied minors arriving in Bulgaria from Israel over the past week and advising them on their rights, the Agency said Monday.

According to Bulgarian legislation in the field of child protection, such children are considered children at risk.

Social Assistance Agency Executive Director Nadya Teneva said that social workers can provide pedagogical, psychological, legal assistance and social support. Consultation with psychologists will be particularly necessary in order to overcome the horror of the experience. As children at risk, they can be protected by being placed with relatives or foster families, or by being placed in a social or integrated health and social residential care service according to their needs. They will be given the opportunity to attend school regularly, Teneva added.
