National Assembly Chair Rosen Zhelyazkov met with Council of Europe’s Parliamentary Assembly President Tiny Kox, the Parliament's press centre said here on Thursday. The meeting took place in Dublin where they attended the European Conference of Presidents of Parliament.

The main topics of the talks were the challenges facing the free and democratic world after Russia’s war on Ukraine and the role of national parliaments in seeking opportunities for lasting peace in the region and for the reconstruction of the country. Zhelyazkov stressed that parliaments have mechanisms to achieve these goals through the adoption of legislative decisions, policies and initiatives that contribute to the stability, security and prosperity of Ukraine.

He expressed belief that such massive and complex security challenge cannot be overcome without international cooperation. Zhelyazkov reaffirmed Bulgaria's consistent and unwavering position on supporting Ukraine and the need to increase resources to ensure the country's long-term democratic stability.

Kox noted that the Council of Europe’s Parliamentary Assembly is willing to strengthen the dialogue with national parliaments in order to develop greater resilience against global threats. He pointed out that Bulgaria is a loyal member of the EU and a strong NATO ally. Kox underlined Bulgaria’s leading role in the Balkans region, as well as in Central and Eastern Europe.
