The Haskovo District Court has issued a judgment in favour of turning over to Germany a Turkish national wanted for human trafficking under a European Arrest Warrant (EAW). Yalcin Akurt, 47, was arrested at the Kapitan Andreevo border checkpoint on July 18 in an attempt to enter Bulgaria from Turkiye. He was held in custody until the extradition proceedings.
According to the EAW, Akurt and another person transferred more than 20 Turkish and Afghan paying migrants, who were stowed away in a truck at the border between Bulgaria and Serbia and were then transported through Slovakia and Czechia to Germany. It was found that the conditions under which the migrants were transported posed a risk to their life and health, as they were sitting on unsecured wooden stands in the loading area.
The judgment is unappealable. The man will be remanded in custody until his extradition to Germany.
