“As of this week we’ll set up a new coordination mechanism to focus on the import and the dealing of drugs in order to counter this huge problem,” said Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov on Wednesday, ahead of a regular cabinet meeting.

The focus will be on big drug dealers. The coordinating mechanism will complement the work of the National Drugs Council, said Denkov. The main tasks will be under the coordination of the Interior Ministry, the Chief Directorate for Combating Organized Crime and the Border Police. The eGovernment Ministry will also be involved because most of the narcotics is sold online, Denkov said.

He said that people in Bulgaria tend to underlook the issue of drugs - how they end up on the Bulgarian market and how they are distributed. "It is a painful issue, it affects lots of people. Unfortunately, we haven't had much success in combatting the distribution of narcotics," he said.

He added that the issue has re-surged with the distribution of fentanyl, a synthetic drug, which is 100 times stronger than heroin. According to the Prime Minister, this drug is already in Bulgaria, after its first appeared in the US and Western Europe.
