Vice President Iliana Iotova on Wednesday attended an official ceremony at which a street in Montenegro's historic capital Cetinje was named after Bulgarian writer Ivan Vazov. Also, a memorial plaque in his name was unveiled.

Cetinje Mayor Nikola Djuraskovic and Vice President Iotova made remarks at the ceremony. Bulgarian Culture Minister Marian Bachev also attended the ceremony.

In 1877 Ivan Vazov dedicated a poem to Montenegro. The Vice President discussed with Montenegrin representatives naming the street after the Bulgarian writer during her visit there last year.

Iotova noted that good neighbourly relations mean understanding shared history and "continuing to recognize ourselves in this world that is so divided, divided by wars". "If you understand your neighbours, conflicts will find no place between us," she added.

The Vice President told Bulgarian media that Vazov is the only foreign author who has written about Montenegro. "Tomorrow, the children living here will know who Vazov is, they will know our history and what connects us," she stressed. According to her, this is the foundation of good neighbourliness. "Not conflict, division, or rewriting of history, not the theft of history and historical facts, but good neighbourliness that honours our shared memory," she emphasized.

Cetinje Mayor Nikola Duraskovic highlighted that naming a street after Ivan Vazov in Montenegro’s historic capital is proof of mutual respect between the two countries. "Our two countries have cooperated since the Middle Ages, and the shared values of peace, freedom, and cooperation remain the foundation of our friendship today," Duraskovic said.
