A tornado formed in Tulcea County in southeastern Romania, causing panic among residents, local media reported on Thursday. Authorities issued an extreme weather warning via the Ro-Alert system. The tornado occurred in an uninhabited area and was short-lived.
Romania’s National Meteorological Administration Director Florina Georgescu said in a statement to Digi24 that in Romania tornadoes are caused by pronounced atmospheric instability. “Bare soil without vegetation and large temperature fluctuations play a key role," she added.
In recent days, Romania has also seen frequent hailstorms and heavy rainfall. A yellow alert for storms and hail is currently in effect for about half the country.
Unstable weather conditions are expected to continue through the end of the week. Over the weekend, temperatures are forecast to drop significantly, with some areas falling below 10C. In Bucharest, daytime highs will reach around 12C. Snowfall is also possible in the mountains, particularly in the Eastern and Southern Carpathians.
