The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday expressed heartfelt condolences over the terrible tragedy at the Prečko school in Zagreb. "Our thoughts are with the people of Croatia," the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
A child has died in a knife attack committed by a teenager at Zagreb's Prečko primary school, Croatian media reported earlier in the day.
The Croatian government declared Saturday, 21 December, a day of mourning, and candidates in presidential polls cancelled rallies, the Croatian national news agency HINA reported. A national day of mourning is marked in the country by the mandatory display of the Croatian flag at half-mast on all buildings housing state authorities and local and regional government agencies, as well as on other public buildings.
The knife attack at the Prečko Primary School in Zagreb, in which one child died and several others were injured, was carried out by a 19-year-old former student of the school with a record of mental health issues, HINA said.
All five individuals who sustained stab wounds in the attack are being treated in Zagreb hospitals and are in a stable condition, however, three of the injured require surgical treatment, said Health Minister Irena Hrstić.
