Sofia, December 26 (BTA) - Since its launch in late November, the 16th Bulgarian Christmas charity campaign has raised nearly 2 million leva, the President's Press Secretariat said on Wednesday.

The purpose of the 16-year-old initiative of the presidential institution is to promote philanthropy, help address significant problems concerning children's health, and assist the medical treatment of children.

Since November, 1,330,000 leva have been credited to the Bulgarian Christmas fund-raising account, and another 35,000 leva were contributed through ePay.bg. So far, contributors have sent 560,000 text messages on 1117 and voice calls on 0900 1117. Contributions can be made round the year.

A charity concert of the initiative took place at Sofia's Ivan Vazov National Theatre on Christmas Day. It was attended by President Rumen Radev and his wife Desislava Radeva, National Assembly Chair Tsveta Karayancheva, contributors, and Bulgarian Christmas ambassadors and beneficiaries.

At the event, noted Bulgarian musicians, singers, dancers, actors, athletes and journalists made statements in support of severely ill and disabled children.

Lv 33 Mln in 15 Years

The 2016/2017 edition of the campaign raised 2.4 million leva, which went towards the treatment and rehabilitation of 505 children and medical equipment for 22 hospitals and clinics countrywide, it emerged at the beginning of the concert at the National Theatre.

During its 15 years, Bulgarian Christmas has raised a total of 32,764,780 leva and has assisted more than 4,388 children and 281 medical-treatment facilities. LN/LG
