Sofia to Host International Forum on Small Modular Reactors

The Bulgarian Energy & Mining Forum and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Bulgaria are organizing the Fourth International Nuclear Conference on Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), the organizers announced Monday. The event will be held on April 10 and 11 in Sofia and will bring together representatives from the legislative and executive branches, leading companies in technology development, regulators and stakeholders.

The various panels will discuss key issues such as the conditions for successful development of SMRs, their role in meeting decarbonization targets, the safety of power grids, nuclear fuel and waste storage, the prospects for industrial use, and the opportunities for converting coal-fired thermal power plants to small nuclear power.

The forum will be attended by representatives of companies such as Westinghouse, Organization of Canadian Nuclear Industries, Laurentis, Holtec, Siemens, Rolls-Royce, Arabelle Solutions, the French nuclear regulator, Energoprojekt Praha, NPP Kozloduy - New Builds, as well as experts from Bulgarian construction leaders such as KMS and GBS. The conference will also be attended by representatives of the universities that prepare future nuclear engineers - the Technical University, the UNWE, and University of Sofia.

The conference will be held under the patronage of the Minister of Energy Zhecho Stankov.
