The bridge on the central beach in Burgas will be lit in purple on Wednesday on the occasion of World Epilepsy Awareness Day, March 26, as a sign of empathy and tolerance for people suffering from epilepsy, the press centre of Burgas Municipality said.

World Epilepsy Awareness Day, or Purple Day, is a global initiative to raise awareness about epilepsy and to support those affected by it. It aims for people affected by this disease to share about their condition and to have a public conversation about their needs and problems. Association of Parents of Children with Epilepsy in Bulgaria has offices in all larger regional cities in the country, offering support to people with epilepsy.

Epilepsy is the fourth most common neurological disorder after migraine, stroke, and Alzheimer's disease, the association said. The disease is caused by electrical disturbances in the brain, leading to seizures of various types. The disease triples the risk of premature death due to seizure-related incidents. A quarter of epileptic seizures can be controlled through prevention. Epilepsy can be controlled if diagnosed and treated properly, the association added.
