The position Bulgaria has on Ukraine is the only right one that is possible at the moment, according to GERB leader and former Prime Minister Boyko Borissov. He was speaking to the press in Parliament Wednesday.

Earlier today, the leader of MRF-New Beginning Delyan Peevski described it as "spineless".

Emerging from a meeting of the Security Council with the government on March 4, Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov said that the political forces had agreed that "a just and lasting peace can be achieved through security for Ukraine and the European Union". He also said that "it is clear that Bulgaria cannot afford to be placed, actively or passively, in a position where it must choose between different stances on the war taken by the EU and the United States. We regard both as NATO allies and as guarantors of our national security."

Borissov further commented, "I truly hope that after you didn’t want a Prime Minister who could handle this complicated situation, Rosen Zhelyazkov will manage to react appropriately on the spot".

He clarified that GERB-UDF's coalition partners did not want him to be the Prime Minister.

He went on to comment global developments. "You can see that the situation in the US, the decisions being made, changes every day - after President Zelenskyy's position agreeing with what President Trump wanted. That means that the European position will quickly transform."

He expressed satisfaction that his proposals will be included in the European Council agenda Thursday, "specifically the share of GDP for defense not counting toward the global deficit, which means we can ensure more money for defence". "Another proposal is for the European Central Bank to be able to finance projects. Third, a loan should be taken from the entire European Commission with a consensus decision to strengthen the European defence. This is positive for us because our country has a well-developed defence industry and sees potential in innovations," commented Borisov.

"At this council, it could happen that as we act in solidarity with Ukraine, we can strengthen Europe's defence. This is actually what the US wants from us, so that Europe and America are equal partners in NATO," Borisov further said.
