Adherence to the international rule of law, grounded in human rights, is essential in these turbulent times, Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev said during the High-Level Segment at the opening of the 58th session of the UN Human Rights Council, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a press release on Tuesday.

Georgiev highlighted the growing urgency of protecting and promoting human rights in a world facing devastating conflicts, climate change, pollution, biodiversity loss, rapid technological advancements, and deepening inequalities.

He reaffirmed Bulgaria’s voluntary commitments as a member of the UN Human Rights Council, including efforts to promote a culture of peace, tolerance, and understanding, as well as protect the rights of children, people with disabilities, and women and girls.

"The Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action represent a milestone in advancing women's rights and achieving gender equality. Bulgaria firmly believes that targeted policies to empower women and girls are crucial for sustainable development, social justice, and shared prosperity," Georgiev said.

Later, Georgiev took part in a side event marking the third anniversary of Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine, titled 11 years of Human Resistance to the Russian Aggression. Discussions focused on accountability for human rights violations and breaches of humanitarian law committed by the Russian Federation on Ukrainian territory.
