The median age of the population of the European Union reached 44.7 years as of January 1, 2024. This means that half of the population of the European Union was below this age limit, while the other half was above it, the European statistical agency Eurostat said on its official website.
The EU member states with the highest median age of the population were Italy (48.7 years), Bulgaria (47.1 years) and Portugal (47.1 years), and the lowest median age was recorded in Ireland (39.4 years), Luxembourg (39.7 years) and Malta (39.8 years).
As of January 1, 2014, the median age of the population in Bulgaria was 43.7 years, or 3.4 years less than in 2014, when this country was also among the three EU countries with the oldest population after Germany (45.6 years) and Italy (44.7 years), according to a Eurostat database.
For comparison, at the beginning of the century, as of January 1, 2000, the median age of the Bulgarian population was 39.1 years. At that time, the median age of the population was higher in Italy (40.1 years), Serbia (41.1 years), Germany (39.8 years), Sweden (39.3 years) and Finland (39.2 years), according to Eurostat data.
During the 2014 - 2024 period the median age in the EU went up by 2.2 years. Increases have been registered in all EU countries, except Malta (-0.7 years) and Germany (-0.1 years).
Over the period, population aging was most pronounced in Greece, Italy, Portugal and Slovakia, with the median age there increasing by 4 years. The median age in Cyprus, Spain and Poland increased by 3.8 years.
