In September 2024, new car registrations in the EU continued their downward trajectory (-6.1%), show figures of the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) published on Tuesday. Year-on-year, Bulgaria also saw a decline (-14.9%) in new car registrations with 2,522 new cars registered in September 2024, compared to 2,965 units in September 2023.

Negative results were observed across three of EU’s four major markets: France (-11.1%) and Italy (-10.7%), with the German market declining by 7%. On the other hand, Spain experienced a healthy rebound (+6.3%), ACEA said.

In Bulgaria, petrol car registrations accounted for 74.1% of the domestic car market in September, down from 79.7% in September 2023. New diesel cars accounted for 17.3% of the market in Bulgaria, a rise from 11.1% in September 2023. The market share of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in Bulgaria in September 2024 stood at 4.1%.

Nine months into 2024, new car registrations in the EU remained stable (+0.6%), reaching nearly 8 million units. Spain (+4.7%) and Italy (+2.1%) showed positive performances, while the French and the German car markets declined (-1.8% and ‑1%, respectively).
