An exhibition on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of visual artist Georgi Baev (1924-2007) will be presented at the Dechko Uzunov Art Gallery, a branch of the Sofia City Art Gallery (SCAG). The opening is on September 13, the organizers said.
The exhibition is entitled "Georgi Baev. Horizons" and is part of the "Generations" programme of the Dechko Uzunov Gallery. It outlines the life and work of Dechko Uzunov, one of Georgi Baev’s teachers.
The exhibition includes paintings by Baev created in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, part of the gallery's collection.
Georgi Baev's life and creative path are connected with his native city of Burgas. He spent his entire life there, invariably linking his work with the maritime horizon, the SCAG said.
Upon graduating from the Art Academy in 1949, Georgi Baev became a laureate of the 6th World Youth Festival in Moscow. Later, in 1961, he received a silver medal at the First National Youth Exhibition in Sofia. He held his first solo exhibition in Sofia and Burgas three years later, in 1964, which was followed by exhibitions in London in 1972 and Budapest in 1973, and by further expositions at home and abroad. He participated in a number of general, national and international exhibitions. He was awarded the prestigious Herder Prize of the University of Vienna in 1986.
Georgi Baev's work is marked by the burning of his studio on the night of June 12, 1983, when he was a guest on the programme "Every Sunday" broadcast on national television. As a result of the fire, more than 250 works, most of his mature oeuvre, were completely or partially burned, the SCAG said.
