National Salvation Day was marked at a commemorative ceremony at Sofia’s Military Medical Academy on Thursday. In Bulgaria, August 15 is dedicated to the memory of all medics, nurses, police officers, firemen, volunteers and citizens who have died saving lives.

The ceremony was attended by caretaker Defence Minister Atanas Zapryanov, Interior Minister Kalin Stoyanov, Health Minister Galya Kondeva, Chief of Defence Admiral Emil Eftimov, as well as senior representatives of the Rakovski National Defence College, the Military Medical Academy, and the Bulgarian Medical Association.

Speaking to reporters at the event, Ventsislav Mutafchiyski, head of the Medical Military Academy in Sofia, said that over 120 doctors and nurses have lost their lives saving another life, and in the years of the coronavirus pandemic over 100 more medics have died.

In Bulgaria, Salvation Day has been marked since 2005 with the support of the Military Medical Academy and in cooperation with the Health Ministry, Bulgarian Medical Association, Bulgaran Red Cross and trade unions, in memory of Stefan Cherkezov MD, who died on August 15, 1963, at the age of 26, rescuing 47 people from a burning bus.
