Bulgaria's top female tennis player, Viktoriya Tomova, was eliminated in the second round of the Olympic Women's Singles event here on Monday. Tomova suffered a 7-6(5), 4-6, 1-6 defeat from 11th seed Emma Navarro from the US after 2:22 hours of play.

The 29-year-old Bulgarian, who climbed to a career-high 46th place in the world rankings on Monday, was able to challenge Navarro in the first two sets, but then problems with her right wrist prevented her from showing her best game in the decider.

Tomova had a break advantage on two occasions early in the match. She was serving at 5-4 to take the first set, however her opponent levelled, bringing the game to a tiebreaker. The Bulgarian athlete showed her class and won it 7-5.

In the second set, both players made several breaks, but in the end the American took it 6-4.

Navarro extended her streak to six consecutive games and pulled 5-0 up in the third, after which Tomova broke, but immediately afterwards wasted a game point on her own serve and conceded another break, ending the match.

The American will play in the third round against China's Zheng Qinwen.
