site.btaBulgaria Is Lowest Performing EU Country on 2019 Corruption Perception Index
January 23 (BTA) - In 2019 Bulgaria was the lowest performer among EU countries on the Corruption Perception Index, according to the latest report. It was presented at a BTA-hosted news conference on Thursday by Transparency International Bulgaria.
Since 2012 Bulgaria has been trailing EU countries in the survey. On a global scale Bulgaria climbed three places to 74th in the ranking with a score of 43 out of 100. The EU average score is 64.
The Corruption Perceptions Index ranks 180 countries and territories by their perceived levels of public sector corruption, according to experts and business people. The index is measured on a scale of 0 to 100, with 0 being the highest perceived level of corruption, and the 100 the lowest. The index draws on data from 13 global surveys. Bulgaria's score is based on ten of those.
The report on Bulgaria identified as problem areas the freedom of the media, the election process, party funding, public appointments and the rule of law. RI/PP
