site.btaUPDATED Atanas Zafirov Will Be Interim Socialist Leader

Atanas Zafirov has been elected as acting chairman of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) at a meeting of the party’s National Council on Saturday. On Tuesday leader Korneliya Ninova tendered her resignation over the party’s showing in the June 9 national and European elections. 

On the agenda of Saturday’s meeting were also the scheduling of a full cycle of reports and election and setting the period when a direct election of a party leader will take place.

Born in 1971, Zafirov has served as MP in seven parliaments. 

He has been a delegate to NATO’s Parliamentary Assembly for three terms and chairs the Bulgarian Rugby Federation.
