site.btaTwo Days before European Elections, Swedish Parties Campaign on Issues of Migration, Climate to Attract Voters
With the European Parliament elections just a couple of days away, the political parties in Sweden are campaigning on the issues of migration and climate change, among others, to try to attract voters. Parties have set up campaign tents on the central Sergels Torg Square with posters pitching their messages.
According to local analysts, however, the campaign posters have largely lost their relevance as most of their functions have been taken over by social media. Most Swedes see posters more as a tradition and do not pay attention to them at all.
The Swedish Social Democratic Party is trying to draw attention to the fact that one of its members, the European Commissioner for Home Affairs, Ylva Johansson, is involved in the development of the EU's new, more restrictive border policies.
Some of the parties, the Centre Party among them, even try to combine the two relevant themes. Their posters read "Hold the line against climate denial!".
It is no surprise to anyone, that the far-right Sweden Democrats party addresses the issue of migration most directly with the slogan “My Europe builds walls”.
The upcoming elections may determine the fate of the small pro-European party, the Liberals. According to opinion polls, it is possible that the party lose its only seat in the European Parliament. In this case, the party's leadership may consider whether to continue being part of the current Swedish Government, the observers say.
