The Council of Ministers here on Wednesday decided Bulgaria to join the European Declaration on Quantum Technologies. The Minister of e-Government was authorized to sign the document.

The Declaration, initiated by the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the EU, was officially published on December 6, 2023. Eighteen Member States have signed it so far: Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, the Netherlands, Romania, Spain, Slovakia, Slovenia and Sweden.

The Declaration views the Union's efforts to develop quantum technologies through the prism of protecting strategic assets, interests, autonomy and security and as a way to avoid strategic dependence on non-EU sources. It highlights the need for the EU to build its own capacity to research and develop quantum technologies and produce devices and systems based on them, while investing in the whole quantum package - from hardware to software to applications and standards, in the main application areas of quantum technologies: quantum computing and simulation, quantum communications and quantum sensors and metrology.

The signatory Member States commit themselves to collaborate in the development of a quantum technology ecosystem, with the ultimate goal of making Europe the "quantum valley", the world's leading region for excellence and innovation in quantum technologies.
