President Rumen Radev, who spoke at the General Assembly of Attorneys in the Country here on Saturday, said that guaranteeing the protection of human rights is a supreme achievement of our democracy. Radev said these rights and justice in society are not a given, as their upholding requires clear principles and daily efforts.
The President said: "It is hardly easier for us today in a time of political vicissitudes, blockage of institutions and feudalization, parallel administration of justice in secret magistrates' clubs, often hasty and bizarre legislation aloof from the public interest."
Radev proceeded to criticize lawmakers for passing laws in one reading and with no public discussion, pushing through important changes in transitional and final provisions, constantly redrafting legislation and reworking amendments.
According to the head of State, "In this complex and contradictory environment, lawyers are the guarantor of justice and the last barrier against lawlessness. If we have speed and predictability, legal certainty and impartial investigation, effective protection of property, we will have quality education, healthcare, infrastructure, security for investment, and young people [will be able] to see the potential of staying here."
The President concluded that such a bright future will not be achieved with election promises but with clear principles and firmness, which is where the Bulgarian attorneys come to provide justice – "the fundamental legitimate aim of any justice reform".
