Bulgarian Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov paid last respects to former president of the European Commission Jacques Delors at a tribute ceremony on January 5 at the Les Invalides memorial complex in Paris, the press service of the Council of Ministers said here on Friday. Delors, who played a key role in the creation of the European single market, the euro and the modern European Union, died on December 27 at the age of 98.

The tribute ceremony to Delors was chaired by French President Emmanuel Macron. European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, European Council President Charles Michel and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also attended the commemorative event.

Denkov offered deep condolences to the family and loved ones of Jacques Delors, as well as to all Europeans.

"It is with sadness that we say goodbye to this eminent European who inspired many, including us Bulgarians, to strive for the achievements and values enshrined in the European nations’ community. His idea of a united and prosperous continent will remain in the hearts and minds of Europeans and will make us cherish cooperation and tolerance, and strive for a better and more united Europe," Denkov said.
