Deputy Energy Minister Nikolay Nikolov said in a BTA interview that Bulgaria will aim to achieve a price of around EUR 6 billion each for the construction of the 7th and 8th units of the Kozloduy NPP. The construction of the units was approved by the Council of Ministers and confirmed by the National Assembly.

In a recently published draft of Bulgaria's energy strategy, Unit 7 in envisaged to put into operation by 2032, but no later than 2033, and Unit 8 - no later than 2035, said Deputy Minister Nikolov.

The Westinghouse's AP 1000 nuclear technology will be used for the project. The potential construction companies have been narrowed down to three - Bechtel, Fluor and Hyundai, said Nikolov. There will be multiple subcontractors. The State is expected to be the only investor in the project.

After the units' commissioning, Bulgaria should start thinking about the choice of technology and the construction of new nuclear power plants that will replace units 5 and 6 of the Kozloduy NPP by 2050. The Belene site has its role, but in a longer-term perspective, commented Nikolov. The idea is to have about 4 gigawatts of permanently operating nuclear power, said the Deputy Minister of Energy.
