A forensic analysis of the blast near former prosecutor general Ivan Geshev's motorcade, which happened on May 1, has been completed, said Sofia city prosecutor Iliana Kirilova at a media briefing. She noted  that the presence of an secondary explosive substance was confirmed.

The question of whether the car could have been blown up with this substance has not been answered, and will require further analysis with computer simulations.
On May 1, an explosion occurred on the road next to the car of the then-prosecutor general Ivan Geshev. This happened while his motorcade was moving along the road from Samokov to Sofia, in the area of the village of Kovachevtsi.

The forensic examination consisted of a complex chemical and explosive analysis. A total of 23 objects were confiscated  during the inspection of the scene and examined, explained the deputy city prosecutor and spokesperson Hristo Krastev. Six experts participated in the analysis and  indicated that the explosive substance used was pentaerythritol tetranitrate, he explained.

The substance was not produced in Bulgaria, Kirilova added. "As far as we know, the substance was not in its pure form, there were impurities in it, she said, noting that this is a controlled substance is used in "military factories or specialized services".

"The substance was placed in an improvised explosive device, which was activated by means of an electric impulse", informed Krastev. And he added that the amount of the explosive substance was about 2.5 kg.

During the pre-trial proceedings, officers from the National Security Service who guarded Geshev, citizens who passed through the scene of the incident, relatives and acquaintances of the former prosecutor general, etc., were questioned.

Krastev said that investigators are following up on all possible versions, from the possibility that Geshev was being forced to leave the post of prosecutor general, to the possibility the incident was staged. The investigation is still ongoing.
