A staffer of the Ministry of Youth and Sports has been arrested for bribery, the prosecution service said Friday. The man was arrested with just over BGN 62,000.

The banknotes were pre-marked. 

The prosecutors have alerted the counter-corruption commission, said Sofia prosecutor Iliana Kirilova. 

The man is believed to have taken the money in exchange for a promise to make sure an unspecified sports federation does not lose its subsidy and get BGN 1.2 million in state funding for a European championship.  

Kirilova would neither confirm nor deny that the bribe was about an upcoming European weightlifting championship.
