The employment rate of citizens of the European Union aged 20 to 64 was 75.3% in the third quarter of 2023. This is a decrease of 0.1 percentage points compared to the previous, second quarter, according to data from the European statistical agency Eurostat. In the same period, Bulgaria had the second highest decrease in employment in the EU.
Between the second and third quarters of 2023, the level of employment in EU countries varied significantly. Malta (+1.1 percentage points) and Belgium (+0.5 percentage points) recorded the highest employment growth among the 11 member states where there was an increase. The level of employment in the third quarter compared to the previous quarter remained stable in Luxembourg and the Netherlands, but fell in 14 EU member states, with the largest decrease recorded in Croatia (-1.3 points) and Bulgaria (-1.1 points).
