Bulgaria and Turkiye launch a joint project to improve security in border areas. The activities will be financed under the 2021-2027 Interreg VI-A IPA Bulgaria Turkiye Cross-border Cooperation Programme, the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works reported.

The project to increase the capacity and improve the cooperation of law enforcement authorities on the territory of the regions of Burgas, Haskovo and Yambol, Edirne and Kirklareli in the field of migration is worth EUR 1.7 million. It aims to purchase modern equipment for the structural units of the partners involved in the fight against illegal migration, as well as to conduct joint trainings, demonstration activities and working visits to exchange experiences between the Bulgarian and Turkish Ministries of Interior.

The objective is to achieve a more efficient functioning of migration management systems and asylum procedures in both countries.

The contract for the implementation of the project will be awarded on Tuesday morning in Burgas by the Deputy Minister of Regional Development and Public Works, Angelina Boneva, and by the Deputy Minister of Interior, Ivelina Dundakova. The event will also be attended by the Consul General of the Republic of Turkiye in Burgas, Tolga Orkun, and representatives of local and central government in the region.
