Motorists who are about to travel in the following days should get their vehicles geared up for winter weather, the Road Infrastructure Agency (RIA) warned. Intense rainfall is expected in Northwest Bulgaria on November 24.

Over the weekend, precipitation in the Forebalkan is expected to change to snow and temperatures to drop. On Sunday, November 26, snowdrifts are possible to form from the strong winds in Western and Central Bulgaria and the northeastern regions of the country.

RIA appeals to motorists to drive with caution and at a reasonable speed, keeping the necessary distance and avoiding abrupt manoeuvres. The blocking of traffic by vehicles that are not well prepared for winter weather hampers the travel of all other drivers and makes it difficult for the snow removal equipment to work, the Agency said.

Together with the road maintenance companies, the regional road administrations will take the necessary actions to treat the pavements in the high mountain areas and passes, where the temperatures are lower, and icing is possible, especially early in the morning. The aim is to start preventive action, and subsequently snow-clearing activities, when the weather is expected to deteriorate in order to ensure that roads are passable.

Priority will be given to motorways, the busiest routes on the first and second class road networks and the passes linking North and South Bulgaria.

Information on the current road situation and the national network maintenance can be found on the RIA website.
