A code orange warning was issued for Eastern Bulgaria on Sunday due to strong wind by the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH). The regions affected include Burgas, Varna, Dobrich, Ruse, Razgrad, Silistra, Sliven, Targovishte, Shumen, Yambol.

Stormy and hurricane-force winds are expected from the north-northwest with gusts of up to 30-35 m/s. Considerable rainfall is expected as well and will quickly turn into wet snow with amounts of more than 25 mm, even along the Black Sea.
A snow cover will form in Strandzha and along the old mountain passes, NIMH warned.

The sea waves in Burgas are expected to reach 6 degrees Douglas, and in Varna – 5 degrees Douglas, but will subside in the afternoon.

A yellow code warning was issued for the regions of Veliko Tarnovo, Gabrovo, Kardzhali, Stara Zagora, Haskovo. In these areas, the forecast is for a strong and temporarily stormy north-northwesterly wind with gusts up to 20-25 m/s.

On Sunday night, the Municipality of Varna declared a state of emergency due to extremely strong hurricane-force winds and rains, and the sharply worsening weather conditions.

On Saturday, the strong winds caused damage throughout the country, left some villages without power and were the cause of two fatalities, a man in Sofia and a woman in Varna.
