Supreme Bar Council President Ivaylo Dermendjiev along with 46 representatives of national bar associations from Europe participated in a conference on the role of the European institutions in upholding the core values of the legal profession in the administration of justice in Brussels on October 23, organized at the European Parliament by the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe (CCBE).

Also participating were EU Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders, European Court of Justice President Marc van de Woude, and Council of Europe Secretary General Marija Buric.
On the agenda were the independence of the legal profession, the impact of digital technologies and the protection of lawyer confidentiality, said Dermendzhiev.

The discussions showed the complexity of the challenges with which lawyers are faced in times of changing technological and legal contexts, he added.

Underscoring the needs for European institutions to recognize and defend the role of lawyer community as a pillar of the rule of law, the speeches of participants sent an important message. The times of the digital revolution call for adaptation and active participation of lawyers in the setting out of the legal framework on AI and the related issued of confidentiality and security, said Dermendzhiev.

The event was also a forum for dialogue and exchange of opinions between participants, he added.
