The leader of the Greek left-wing SYRIZA party and former prime minister Alexis Tsipras cast his vote in Sunday's Greek parliamentary elections in Athens. He said that the vote will decide the quality of Greek democracy in the next four years.

"In today's final and decisive electoral race, and under the reinforced proportional system, which gives 50 additional seats to the winning party, it is decided who and how will govern in the next period, it is decided what our life will be like in the next four years, but it is also decided what the quality of democracy will be. The decision [...] is whether we will have a strong opposition to control the government," Tsipras said. According to him, his party is the only political force that can reliably fulfil this role.

According to opinion polls, centre-right New Democracy party is ahead convincingly with a support of around 40%, which gives SYRIZA a virtually secure role as opposition in the next Greek parliament.
